After being delayed by many snow days, our newest and first non-drawing project - abstract expressionist paintings - has officially gotten underway. As I'm not completely sure what I want to do, and know even less about how I want to execute my essentially nonexistent project plan, the painting so far doesn't look like much. I have so far had two full studio days to work, and though I have been painting or mixing paint the entire time, it looks somewhat plain.
Of three thumbnails I made prior to starting the painting, I was most drawn to one that embodied the theme of several preliminary prints I had made in the past few months. Thinking highly of their galaxy-like appearances, I chose to pick the thumbnail that reminded me of those first prints. However, I am painting, not printing, and so I am forced to apply the paint very differently, unable to depend on white spots that show through for my "stars." Said stars and other celestial bodies (not planets or asteroids, though) will be added with white paint, hopefully soon, once I decide on the method I want to use to add the smaller white flecks. Having never made this kind of painting before (in my memory), this will be a new experience for me, a feeling I am beginning to realize comes with just about every project we've done this year.
