Well, this project certainly went by fast! After only a few weeks of studio time, I can proudly call this painting finished. All that's left to do is decide on a title - I'm debating between "Memoriam" and "Aquarius." A good-quality photo should be coming soon so that the gallery page can (finally!) have something to show for the work I've done and will continue to do.
At the beginning of this project, I was having trouble deciding between thumbnails to use for the final painting, and so I went with the one I liked best even though I wasn't particularly attached to it. As a result, my inspiration was somewhat limited, and I used the same color scheme as prints we made a few weeks before starting to paint because that was what the chosen thumbnail was based on. In fact, I had a very vague idea of where I was going until I added the spirals/vortexes. I loved the way the first one looked, so I added more (though they didn't turn out quite as beautiful as the first one). The splatter painting of white only made it look more complete, and though I took out the two stars in the top - I loved them, but they drew attention away from the center - the covering-up of the stars and whitening of the corners that followed were the final touches I didn't realize the painting needed until I made them. I began to feel more attached to the painting after I discovered that making progress with it helped me cope with a recent death, and that was when the title Memoriam came to me. It's been stuck in my head for over a week now, and the only title I've been attached to that way since is Aquarius, which only just popped into my head today. Since I have to come up with a title by Wednesday (technically Friday, but I'll be out of town and unable to turn in my critique sheet with the title on it until the next class, which is on Wednesday - go President's Day weekend), I'll have that added when I get the nice photo of the painting into the gallery.
