Part 2 of 2 is here! (Expect a gallery picture as soon as I can find proper lighting.) I am very pleased with the outcome. The only two issues seem to be the brush strokes that, even after multiple layers of paint, still exist (although those are much less prominent than they used to be, and barely at all from far away), and the shininess of the paint. As shown in the terrible quality of some of the pictures, the glare makes it very difficult to take pictures of the piece, but hopefully I can find a place with proper lighting to take a photo.
I still do not have a title for this piece, but hopefully it will come to me soon. It will probably have something to do with either fear or truth, as both of those themes (listed in order of importance) are incorporated into the piece. I may use those themes (in addition to the overlying sexual assault theme), or at least one of them, in my next piece, but I will have to see what happens. Part 1 of 2 of my latest project pictures! I do not yet have a title for this one (even though it's finished), but hopefully that comes soon. The piece is entirely in paint (my first this year!), but it marks a return to Bristol board from wood panel. (I did like using panel, but I only used it so that I wouldn't have a panel left over at the end of the year.) It is also very minimal, entirely black (the first layer of that is shown in the final picture of this slideshow) with the only exceptions being a lightbulb and a red solo cup hallucination on the left side of the piece. I hope to use very thin layers of red paint on the several layers of hallucination so that it better shows the loss of reality.
This piece is yet another continuation of my apparent theme of sexual assault - in this case, it shows the worst-case scenario relating to the "don't put your cup down at parties, no matter what" idea. I am only a year and a half away from college (and with college comes parties), and the idea that this future is hanging over my head is more than a little frightening. The piece is made as a representation of fear, and understandably it could be very upsetting to people because of that. Hopefully I never find myself in this sort of situation, but that is an unrealistic hope, and even now I catch myself starting to think about what I would do if I found myself in that situation. It's finished! Expect a gallery picture once I can get proper lighting (hopefully soon, but no later than the second week of April). This was my first project of the year using paint, which is strange because I like to paint, and it was nice to go back to it. In my next project (pictures coming soon; will be released in 2 phases), I will definitely be using all paint, rather than mixed media like with this piece.
Even after being warned that colored pencil and wood are not the best combination, I am still pleased with how it turned out (just don't get too close to it, as more wood texture shows through the closer you get), and I am satisfied with the combination of colored pencil and paint. I also like how pop-artsy it turned out to be in terms of the color scheme and style, even though it doesn't really match with the content. I do need to improve on my shading skills with the paint; hopefully doing my next project will help with that.
