Questions:
1. How did her childhood affect and inspire her style? 2. How did she revolutionize the world of modern sculpture? (Why is she an important sculptor?) 3. What are some of the more important symbols in her work, and what do they mean? After a few studio days wasted because 1) I kept forgetting to find a board and 2) once I went and picked one out, I kept forgetting to fix it up for class, I made a lot of progress and can (cautiously) call this sculpture done. I may make a few edits to it here and there, as I still have not had my piece officially critiqued by the class, but there is little else I can imagine doing to it. The only creative decision left is to decide how it will be displayed so that the gold thread is visible to everyone who sees it, as with a cluttered art classroom in the background it is difficult to see in both real life and progress photos.
As for a title, my original plan was to call the sculpture "Cleopatra," as an homage to early ideas I never used that were based off the song Cleopatra. However, I feel like this title might not be the best fit for the idea I eventually chose, and I will have to consider other options before the sculpture is due (April 3rd). Hopefully an idea will come to me, like "Aquarius" did for my AbEx painting, but I can't count on that happening every time I have "title block." Progress on my sculpture has moved faster than I expected - each hand took me one studio day to finish, whereas I had expected each hand to take up at least 2 studio days. I have also edited the fingers to make them look more complete and covered up any hole I found, though I do not have pictures of that step because the hands look the same in photos before and after the edits.
My next step will be to mount the hands on a base - I found a suitable plank for that and will make it look nice before mounting - and hopefully I can get that done on Friday. After mounting, I will need to find some string (yarn, twine, or something else not too thin to be seen), spray-paint it gold, and string it around the fingers. I will need to complete those last few steps soon, however, as the project is due in a few short weeks. As of last week, we have moved even further away from the traditional drawing with which we started the year: we have moved into the realm of sculpture, away from 2D art. I haven't made a sculpture in God-knows-how-long, so this will be an interesting challenge. Pictures and progress posts will be coming soon.
I have an entire page in my sketchbook filled out with notes and scribbles and sketches, but as of now I have no idea which of the sketches I want to use. I have hands and rings and torsos, packing tape and wood and string, words all over the place on the page, but I'll have to look at the page for a while to move past a basic starting point. |
