I have finally started the drawing! Due to being out of town I was unable to work on the drawing much, so about half of the sketch is finished. I intend to start on the Conté this week, which shouldn't be too difficult of a goal as long as I don't procrastinate. So far, the sketch has been somewhat hard. Unlike with my last Conté drawing project, I chose not to physically draw a grid, and that has caused some difficulty in determining where to draw certain outlines. Once I figure out where to start the marks, the sketch shouldn't take too long to finish, but that depends on how much free time I have this week.

Today I can gladly report that I have chosen my image for the portrait! After going back and taking a second round of photos (none of which I liked) and narrowing down my selections a little bit more, I settled on this one. I was trying to have a very intense stare in the picture, and this was the only intense-stare one I took with good lighting. (The second round of photos made me look either tired or sad.)
However, beyond that, there isn't much I have done this week. I did come in at lunch to finalize my photo decision and get my paper (measuring it, cropping it, and deckling the edges while I was there), and I also signed out the Conté crayons I needed, but my nice deckle-edged paper is very blank as of right now. My plan for next week involves utilizing the first few days of Thanksgiving break (due to a trip to Blacksburg later in the week, I will not be home for much of the break) to make significant progress on the drawing. I would be satisfied if, at the very least, I got to adding some form of Conté to a preliminary sketch. As the new 9 weeks begins, another project is on its way: self-portraiture! The project is to be done in the same medium as used with the Old Master drawing; so, in my case, Conté crayon. (This will certainly give me a lot of practice with a medium I hated until very recently!) The process of this project will be much the same as the Old Master drawing process - still drawing from an image, still using the same paper and medium, still using Conté - but the main difference here is that this will be the first at-home project of this year. That will be very new for me, as I have never really done a large art project at home before. (I've done little things here and there over the years, but nothing like this.)
My progress as of this point is essentially nonexistent. The only progress I've made, really at all, is taking (several) pictures of myself to see which pose I like best. I wanted my hands to be in the picture, and I wanted to have at least a few decently prominent highlights and shadows in the photo I eventually chose, so after fiddling around with my phone camera for a little while I narrowed it down to the three pictured above. I still don't know which one I'm leaning towards quite yet, and I haven't measured my paper yet, let alone deckled the edges or drawn a grid. Hopefully my progress with this drawing moves much more quickly than that with my Old Master drawing, as I would really like to fully finish my project this time around. Hello all! (Sorry this is so late!) I have been working very diligently on this project for the past few weeks, and finally "finished" it last Friday (the 4th)! The "final" drawing looks very nice, although I do wish I could have finished the fabric on the left side. (Sadly, time was not permitting.)
The drawing has been mounted, and as of now I do not have a picture of the mounted drawing. Also: at some point in the very near future I hope to finish the fabric on the left side. This would not be part of the graded piece, but it would help to make it look actually finished in its gallery picture. Hopefully I can add the fabric before the official gallery photo is taken, but if not, so be it. It looks nice the way it is, and it will at least be mounted for the photo. |
