Well...I'm finally here! I've finally reached Art V. Now that I've been making art of my own design for a year, I feel like I should be more aware of what I want to make, but I'm still not quite sure. I spent most of last year drawing and painting, and while I loved doing that, it was suggested to me that those were just default media (and it's a valid point; I didn't even consider using any other way of making art last year with few exceptions). At the same time, I'm not sure what I would want to use if I were to move into 3D media, and I still need to figure out my content since I feel like the issue I've been making art about, while important, is becoming almost redundant in my art. (I may come back to it later once I've given it a break; time will tell.) Hopefully I figure all that out soon!

Very, very late (I'm not even in this class anymore!), but here it is! Considering my piece was fairly rushed (since I didn't realize we had one last project), I think it turned out nicely. The piece depicts the abandoned body of a sexual assault victim in the darkness (either of night or a dark room; both fit the content). The piece is meant to point out the almost casual rapes that seem to happen a lot in college (or at least that is what my college books make it out to be) - girl walks alone at night/drinks something sketchy/does something else that should be innocent, girl is assaulted, girl is abandoned as if she has served her purpose and is no longer needed to satisfy anyone.
While my summer project (post coming soon) fits my content, I am beginning to feel stifled by my content. I am definitely still passionate about this issue, but I may move on to a new content under the massive umbrella of feminist issues. A new project is due in a month or so, and I will have to see what happens there.
To kick off fourth quarter (yes, this is a little late), we went to the masters thesis exhibition at VCU to see art made by grad students. As shown in the pictures, the art varied wildly, ranging from paintings/illustrations with audio installed to a kitchen entirely coated with foil to a complex system of plants and water. I loved almost everything I saw, and going to the exhibition made me look forward to the senior show even more (and it's not even my year yet).
I did have some favorites (and least favorites), though. My most favorite was Polyanthroponemia by Magdolene Dykstra (ironically, it was the one I almost didn't find because I didn't realize at first that there was one more room left in the gallery), because of how much it seemed to connect with my own work. I got the same sort of strange feeling from her work as I want people to get from mine, so I was glad I did eventually find her installation. I also liked Path by Evan Galbicka, which was the hydroponic installation. It was so different from anything I had ever seen, and although I have no plans to make anything hydroponic, I definitely enjoyed walking around in the room and looking at the intricacies of the exhibition. Seemingly every artist in the exhibition worked large. I have been encouraged for a little while to work large; however, I have not succeeded due to time constraints. I do like to work large, but I would need time and a good plan to do so. These artists definitely serve as an inspiration to work bigger, especially Dykstra (I still can't get over the fact that I almost missed out on what would be my favorite installation that day) and her content's similarity to my own.

Anyway, here is my home project from the second semester. As before, there are no real process posts because I forgot to take pictures until the end. A gallery picture will be up before the end of the week (since the pictures I have were taken without a nice background, they don't look particularly professional, so I need to take new ones). As of yet, this does not have a title, but since its content is about abusive marriages, I should be able to draw something from that.
My belated process post is finally here! I have finished the piece, although I still need to add gallery pictures. Since it's part of a series (and I eventually chose to title the first piece - my most recent in-class piece - Solo), I chose to continue the pattern and call the piece Solo II. (I'll have to fix my gallery to call the first piece Solo I, actually.) Hopefully another piece like this will come soon - but since it's the end of the year, I seriously doubt my ability to make another piece before school lets out, especially one that takes such a painstakingly long process. However, I do like things in threes, so look out for a Solo III coming...eventually. Maybe.
We are finally in the fourth quarter!! To start that off, I have been working on this newest project for a little while now, but haven't gotten around to posting about it until now. I have chosen to make a series out of my previous piece (Solo) - same theme, same black background, same hallucinatory effects (except better-made this time, hopefully), and same general ominous feeling of walking onto a crime scene. This time, however, I have made blue the predominant color, instead of red and yellow like in Solo. As I found in researching for ideas, there exists (in production) a nail polish that turns bright blue when it makes contact with rohypnol in a drink; therefore I chose to make the pill bottle blue and include a blue area around the pills in the cups.
This newest piece is also focused on date rape, but it focuses more so on the pills themselves than the cups in which the pill-infected drink is held. Once the black background is completed, there will be no bright area except where the cups and large circles are. The pills and bottle will be hidden by darkness, except part of one pill has spilled into the light, and the idea is that there will be just enough light cast upon the bottle and the other pills so that, once one sees the pill in the light, one's eyes will follow the trail back to the bottle, and know the truth of what happened.
